To be safe, your mylines script should work regardless of it's location in the file tree. That will guide your decision on whether to use a relative or absolute pathname when outputting your block of text. The directory where you create the mylines script is not required to be on your path. Because ...

Try it the way shown in the tldp.org link above. They are using a method of inserting the escape sequences that don't result in the problems you and Ken are seeing.
