Ch.5 Gillay

Post by JoAnne Brewer » Fri Mar 18, 2011 3:01 pm

Jim,

In working through ch.5 of the Gillay book using the RedHat0-01 VM, I'm running into several Permission denied scenarios where the book is indicating the command I'm trying should work and give a specific result but I'm getting ...blah blah... (Permission denied). (p.236 of the Gillay book step 6 is an example). Has someone changed the permissions and forgot to change them back? When we log out does the VM revert to a known state? I forgot if you told us about that.

I'm able to run most of the commands using different directories so far anyway.

Joanne,
I'm sorry I'm so late in responding to this.
I see that the Chapter 5 activity assumes that the floppy disk containing
the book files is mounted to /mnt.floppy on the virtual machine. It isn't,
and that is the problem.
Instead I placed the book files in a directory called book. So if you
replace /mnt/floppy with /home/cis90/book
wherever you see that pathname, then it should work. From what I see
in /home/cis90 on RedHat-01 it looks like that may have been what you ended up doing.
