when I tried to get the new key I get

Change:
cd /.ssh/known_hosts
to
vi .ssh/known_hosts (to remove specific key) or rm .ssh/known_hosts (to start fresh)
The hidden .ssh directory is in your home directory rather than the top of the UNIX file tree.

Happened to me as well earlier in the semester. After I used some creative language and tried the same thing over a few times I bothered to read the message and apply the fix :)

I see this happen when I re-assign an IP to a different machine or just re-install the OS.
